How to Train Your Dog to Wear Shoes (Step-by-Step)

If your dog does the high-step zombie walk the first time you put on booties, you're not alone — it's a near-universal reaction. The good news: nearly every dog adjusts within a week with a calm, treat-driven plan.

Day 1: Pair shoes with treats, no wearing

Set the booties next to your dog while you feed dinner. Let them sniff. The goal is for the boots to predict good things.

Day 2: Put one bootie on, give a treat, take it off

Don't try all four at once. One front paw, treat, remove. Repeat twice. End on a high note.

Day 3: One bootie, walk a few steps

Once your dog tolerates one boot calmly, ask for a few steps on carpet with high-value treats every step.

Day 4–5: Build to all four, indoors only

Add a boot at a time over two days. Keep sessions under 10 minutes. Always end with the boots off and a reward.

Day 6–7: Take it outside

Once your dog walks normally inside, head out for a short walk. The new surfaces and smells distract from the booties and most dogs forget they're wearing them within a block.
