How to Measure Your Dog's Paws for the Perfect Shoe Fit

The number-one reason dogs reject booties is poor fit. Get the measurement right and most dogs adjust within a few wears. Here's how to size dog shoes correctly in under five minutes.

Step 1: Get your dog standing on paper

Place a blank sheet of printer paper on a hard floor. With your dog standing naturally, weight on all four paws, lift one paw and slide the paper under. Press down gently — the paw should spread the way it does mid-step.

Step 2: Trace the paw including toenails

Using a pen held vertically, trace around the paw and the front of the toenails. Nails count — booties have to clear them.

Step 3: Measure width, not length

Measure the widest part of the tracing in inches or centimeters. Width matters more than length for boot fit. Match that measurement to the brand's size chart.

Step 4: Add 0.05–0.1 inch of clearance

Booties should be slightly larger than the paw — about 1.3–2.5 mm of room. Too tight and they'll rub; too loose and they'll fly off.

Measure both front and back paws

Many dogs have larger front paws than rear paws. If sizes differ, go with the bigger measurement and rely on the adjustable strap to snug the smaller paw.
