Dog Shoes for Large Breeds: Durability That Lasts
A 70-pound retriever or 90-pound shepherd puts more force through each paw with every stride than most dog boots are designed for. If you have a big dog, durability and grip aren't optional features — they're the whole product.
Why cheap booties fail on large dogs
Thin soles wear through within a few hikes. Lightweight uppers tear at the seams. Weak closures pop open mid-stride. Within a month, you're either buying a second pair or doing without.
What to look for
Thick rubber sole with deep tread, reinforced toe area, double-stitched seams, two attachment points (velcro and drawstring), and a snug fit through the upper so the boot moves with the leg instead of flopping.
Sizing notes
Big breeds often have front paws noticeably larger than rear. Always measure both and size up for whichever is wider. A boot that's slightly too long is fine; one that's too tight will cause hot spots.
